Pityana to move on from Unisa

UNIVERSITY of SA (Unisa) vice- chancellor Prof Barney Pityana is to retire at the end of the year, the university says.

Pityana would turn 65 this year and had served the maximum two terms as vice-chancellor, Unisa spokeswoman Doreen Gough said. His post, which he has held since 2001, has been advertised.

Gough said Pityana was considering taking up a visiting professorship overseas.

Pityana came under fire last year after he was suspected of joining the Congress of the People (COPE) ahead of the general election. Student organisations denied their call for Pityana’s head was connected to his political affiliation. COPE spokesman Phillip Dexter later denied Pityana was a party member.

Pityana has always been outspoken and was expelled from the University of Fort Hare in 1969 for political activism.

Pityana was a member of the African National Congress Youth League and a founder member with Steve Biko of the South African Students Organisation, part of the black consciousness movement.

Previously chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission, Pityana has also served as a member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Pityana is an admitted attorney, studied theology at King’s College London and trained for the Anglican ministry at Ripon College in England.

He has published in theology, human rights law and politics.
