Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN group CEO
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has yet again accused mobile companies
of not treating the working class fairly, following the announcement that
MTN Chief Executive Officer, Phuthuma Nhleko, was leaving his continental
mobile giant as from March 2011.

“His departure should serve as a gradual shift from the imperialist role
played by MTN in our country and the continent.

“Nhleko’s leadership style and persona is a personification of the
accumulation path that was advanced by the 1996 class project to appease
domestic power brokers and monopolize industry”, said Matankana Mothapo,
spokesperson for CWU.

The CWU spokesperson accused the former MTN boss of leaving after his
“aborted mission” to sell MTN on a “silver platter” to the hands of foreign
capital.

The CWU also noted that the effects and impacts of the high cost of mobile
calls were being felt by the working class and the poor of our country.

“Hence, the Ministry of Communications was forced to mandate ICASA to
intervene on the high cost of mobile tariffs”, added Mothapo.

However, CWU wished Nhleko well in his future endeavors.
