*Thick End of the Wedge*

/Ngubane and Molefe/

*Peter Bruce, Business Day, Johannesburg, 24 May 2010*

WHAT is it about the SABC that attracts trouble? How could Ben Ngubane appoint good old Phil Molefe as head of news without consulting the board? Yet there he is insisting he acted within the rules while 10 of his 15 board members say he didn't. There will not be a happy end to this. Ngubane will have to go or his board will, I fear.

Ngubane's actions betray the one thing he was trying to hide --- that Molefe would not have been given the job had the board been able to decide. It's an absolute disgrace, just as was the appointment by former interim board chair Irene Charnley of Solly Mokoetle as CEO in the final moments of her mandate. Jacob Zuma's been telling friends that when Molefe came to see him the other day, he was taken aback to find the Prez watching eNews. Who can blame Zuma, though, given the nonsense the SABC serves up?
