I like the term awkward park. It epitomizes what the institution has
been in the past(pre-1994), continues to be and perhaps, as some would
have it, will remain like it is and even worse for some time.

I wonder what deal was struck with the national party in the
negotiations for a "new" South Africa.

Other things that are happening, like this appointment including others
like it in the entire public sector, are so ridiculous you doubt whether
we are going forward or running in a treadmill.

When the Minister is able to publicly bend the law, and there is silence
everywhere including the so called opposition, what democracy are we
having.

SABC union no to Molefe appointment

Sibongile Mashaba, Sowetan, Johannesburg, 3 June 2010

A DAY after Phil Molefe was confirmed as SABC head of news and current
affairs, the drama around his appointment continued.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said yesterday the appointment,
which was reversed last week only to be confirmed by SABC chief
executive Solly Mokoetle on Tuesday, was irregular.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that Molefe was introduced
to staff as the new boss on Tuesday.

Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda's spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso
said Nyanda formally appointed Molefe following a meeting with the SABC
board chairperson Ben Ngubane last week.
But, CWU spokesperson Matan- kana Mothapo said: "It is strange and
unacceptable that Nyanda appointed Molefe. It is illegal."

A pressure group, Save Our SABC Coalition, echoed the union's view.

It's coordinator, Kate Skinner, said: "Legally the minister cannot make
the appointment. The appointment of head of news can only be made by the
board.

"The appointment of Phil Molefe thus remains null and void.

"We need to wait for the board to complete their processes around this
appointment. We hope they do this swiftly ," Skinner said.

Molefe declined to comment.

" According to the appointment, June 1 was his first day in office as
the head," Kganyago said.

He said he didn't know about any of the meetings.

"I do not want to be caught in between. I will not comment about the
appointment. All I can say is the introduction is for the previous
appointment (made by Ngubane last week). The appointment issue will be
resolved by the board," he said.

Molefe's appointment sparked anger last week after Ngubane and Mokoetle
made the decision without consulting other board members.

Ten members of the 12-member board met to discuss Molefe's appointment .
Ngubane and Mokoetle were not present.

Kganyago released a statement saying the board resolved that the
appointment was "null and void and has no legal effect".

The appointment was reversed.
