*Malema purges on* *Mayibongwe Maqhina, The Times, Johannesburg, 9 June 2010*The Eastern Cape ANC Youth League is the latest casualty in the drive by the national leadership aligned to league president Julius Malema to purge his rivals.
The league's national working committee yesterday disbanded the provincial leadership at a meeting attended by Malema.
This was communicated to a faction led by provincial secretary Ayanda Matiti, Malema supporters, at the ANC provincial offices in King William's Town. The North West and the Western Cape executive committees were dissolved last month.
The league has failed for months to hold peaceful provincial conferences.Division was mainly about Malema. The April conference in Polokwane, in Malema's home province, ended in chaos as an anti-Malema faction was chased out.
The King William's Town announcement came soon after a faction led by provincial chairman Mlibo Qoboshiyana lodged a dispute about the failed conference at the weekend.
Matiti supports Malema's re-election. Qoboshiyana wants his deputy, Andile Lungisa, to take over.
League secretary-general Vuyiswa Tulelo said yesterday the national leadership took its decision after provincial executive committee members did not attend, despite asking for the meeting to be put off until 7pm.
"We had no choice but to dissolve the leadership."Regional general councils would be convened to listen to branches. "We say we must go to branches."
