*Mussolini, Hitler and Malema*
The origin of fascism and the history of its rise are at first very surprising. Although it had bourgeois support all the way through, yet fascism declared itself to be an "anti-capitalist", disciplined force promising development and a better life. The word for this kind of false rhetoric is "demagogy".
Mussolini and Drexler (the founder of the Nazi party) both came from the anti-communist fringes of an expanding organised labour movement. Both copied labour-movement structures, but without the democracy.
Though fascism is always reactionary and anti-communist, yet nationalisation and centralism were parts of fascist policy. These were turned so as to assist the schemes of the bourgeoisie.
The full name of the Nazi Party was "National Social-Democratic Workers' Party". The Nazis lied and said that the German Communists were fakes, who according to them represented a foreign (Jewish) conspiracy and ideology.
The fascists systematically used bullying and empty but menacing oratory, and they exploited crowd hysteria. They manipulated the media and they divided the people between "our own" and others defined as enemies.
To say that Julius Malema and the ANC Youth League leadership exhibit all of these aspects of fascism at times is not to insult them. The term "fascism" is precisely not being used here as an insult, but scientifically.
Communists who know the objective basis of fascism should not be surprised that some of its aspects should manifest themselves in South Africa, as a reaction to successful and growing working-class organisation.
Nor should we over-react. What we have to do is to nip such fascistic outbreaks in the bud, firmly and without delay, while continuing to grow the organised labour movement and other mass structures, including the ANC.
We have to say to those bourgeois elements, young and old, who are attracted towards fascism: We are not suppressing you. You are welcome to be members of the ANC. But you must not try to usurp the role of the labour movement. You must not use demagogy or any other deceptive anti-communist tricks.
The mission of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) is democratic, and not fascist. The main task under the NDR is to spread democracy through all kinds of mass organisations, to all corners of the territory and to all levels of the population. The communists educate, organise and mobilise for this. It is our job. We are nothing to fear.
