*News anchor continues fight* *Judy Lelliott, The Times, Johannesburg, 19 July 2010*SABC3 news anchor Mahendra Raghunath is hauling the public broadcaster back to the CCMA for refusing to renew part of his contract after his suspension was lifted.
The latest development follows a furore in February in which SABC's TV news head, Amrit Manga, suspected that Raghunath was the source of damaging newspaper reports about dissatisfaction in the broadcaster's newsrooms.
Raghunath was suspended but reinstated last month following an internal inquiry. But his contract to read the news on TV was not renewed and he has been writing news bulletins instead.
Raghunath's union representative, Ernest Dlamini, of the Media Workers' Association, said this amounted to "unfair labour practice and victimisation".
"The entire suspension was lifted, which means he did nothing wrong and he is not guilty. When he came back, they did not provide him with a news reading contract.
"We have tried to engage with the SABC but it seems they do not want to come to the party," Dlamini told The Times yesterday.
Raghunath's previous contract involved writing and reading the news, but the SABC has refused to renew his news anchor contract.
"He has been prejudiced. They are saying that the contract was a freelance one and the SABC was within its rights to cancel that," Dlamini said.
"He was brought back but he has been denied this additional income."SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago's cellphone was switched off yesterday and he could not be reached.
