It is our long held view and position that we cannot afford to lose lives of ordinary workers due to lack of security measures on the part of bosses and executives. It is further very disturbing that companies have a tendency of hiding or trying to hide death of workers simply because they want to increase their profit accumulation. Workers cannot be sacrificed for silly and exploitative reasons – in learning that the Northam Platinum tried to hide these deaths indicates the necessity on the part of National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) to initiate a comprehensive campaign against these companies. The fact that the Department of Mineral Resources informed workers that a section 54 notice of Mine Health and Safety has been issued, which indicated that operations in that branch should be suspended – further shows a level of disrespect for the law on the part of the company – equally it calls for effective action from the Department. Indeed it should never be just an empty statement from the Department when it says it will act against those companies which reduce the lives of workers to nothing by not implementing proper health and safety measures. We think this issue of safety in the mining industry in particular proves us correct that as long as mines are owned and controlled by profit crazy private companies, lives of workers will continue to be lost, and therefore brings the issue of State ownership and control on the agenda. It is very worrying to note that according to the NUM about 70 workers have lost their lives so far just in a period of seven Months – we cannot allow this to go on without a challenge as long as workers are turned into sacrificial lambs for profits.
