*YCLSA WELCOMES SAA’s DECISION TO LAY CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST NGQULA*

*22 JULY 2010*

The Young Communist league of South Africa (uFasimba) welcomes the decisive
and tough manner in which South African Airways has decided to deal with the
flamboyant former CEO Khaya Ngqula. His conduct whilst as the CEO of SAA
unfortunately explains why the profitability of SAA fast changed to losses.
We have been consistent in calling for the investigation of parastatals that
operate like Private corporations to the detriment of South Africans

Such unscrupulous behavior and misconduct has costed SAA and government
millions. This is blatant robbery not only to government but South Africans.
Thousands of young workers have protested against SAA during his time due to
unfair labour practices and wage disputes; however he chose to use SAA funds
to finance his lavish lifestyle and evident ambitions of being wealthy
through SAA resources.

If there is substantial evidence that Khaya Ngqula has solicited funds,
then there is no question or doubt that he should account. The credibility
and reputation of our parastatals is still under scrutiny due to such
discrepancies and lack of transparency. We applaud the board of SAA for
ensuring that thorough investigations are done and that even former senior
executives will be brought back to account. The fact that criminal charges
have been laid, indicates that this investigation is not merely a formality
or smoke screen, but a serious attempt to get back what rightfully belongs
to the people of South Africa and restore the dented image of Parastatals.

This is shockingly the very same man that got an exorbitant golden handshake
even after questionable conduct as a CEO. All the monies owed should be
recovered and even other officials linked who were allegedly given
unwarranted bonuses should also face the same consequences. Our parastatals
have been seen as cash cows for far too long and this has allowed the hand
of opportunism to operate without punitive measures been taken.

Let this be a lesson for even other current and former CEO’s that know very
well that they use the positions to fast track their wealth accumulation. We
urge the legal team to find ways to untangle the legal contracts that Ngqula
has tied SAA to and that the matter be accorded due process and speedily
resolved. These also include the supposed golf sponsorship which clearly
does not benefit SAA in anyway. Such investigations should not only be
limited to SAA but other parastatals too.
