*CWU Media Release, 6 August 2010*

*SABC Kindergarten***

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has been following shenanigans at the
South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). It is with dismay that we see
other organizations calling the SABC Board counter-revolutionaries. Theirs
is a lone voice that is out of sync with the rest of the right thinking and
objective South Africans, who do not require specialised spectacles to see
that the problem at the SABC is its CEO and Chairperson – and now of late,
the Head of News who was recently appointed under dubious circumstances.

CWU stand firm and support the board of the SABC. BUT, we like to appeal to
the board to discipline the two, the Chairperson of the Board and the GCEO
of the SABC. These two have been running this public broadcaster like an
unlicensed township shebeen. Workers have been fired and dismissed and the
two have never done anything. We also urge the board to reverse the forceful
retirement of Sue Dennison with immediate effect. We can’t afford to have
leadership that meet in golf clubs and malls - sip red wine – then decide
who should be fired and who should be hired without following proper
procedures.

It is also alleged that GCEO gave one of the ANC top officials a tender that
is worth more than seventy million (R70m) of building an SABC building in
Mpumalanga province so that he can defend him on the appointment of Head of
News and on any other illegal activity that might be uncovered by the media.

CWU applaud the progressive Board members of men and women that are fighting
corruption and willing to dedicate their efforts to serve the working class
and the poor, who are in majority in this country.

CWU will support the anti- corruption campaign that was launched by our
federation, Cosatu, and the vanguard of the working class, the SACP. Let the
Gucci-preneurs, the tender-preneurs, the bling-leaders, the publicity
seekers, those who ascend to position of leadership using populist rhetoric,
and demagogues tremble! Their days at the SABC are numbered!
