*YCLSA Media Release, 10 August 2010* *YCLSA Supports Public Sector Strike Starting Today*The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba), fully supports the thousands of workers coming out in numbers today to defend their right to a decent wage and favourable working conditions. The Public sector strike, which starts today comprises of various workers, who are members of unions within the public sector, demanding that their voices are heard by government and demands are met.
We condemn the opportunistic isolation of teachers (SADTU) in particular by some members of the public, who want to create the impression that teachers are being irresponsible by striking. There is no voice that reprimands government or management (in the instance of the private sector) for not meeting the demands of workers. They equally need to take responsibility if there are economic ramifications as a result of the strike. Teachers are workers as well as parents that have a right to earn a decent living wage too. The bargaining process is a lengthy one, and no union spontaneously decides to embark on a strike without prior negotiations.
Every worker has a right to demand what is rightfully due to them. Executives continue to be paid exorbitant bonuses and salaries and some government senior officials had the luxury of sitting in executive booths in soccer matches whilst workers were told to be patient with the world cup and not embark on any strikes.
