Business Day *Cosatu to decide on wage offer today* *Alistair Anderson, Business Day, Johannesburg, 17 August 2010*CONGRESS of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) public sector unions will meet the government today, to provide a consolidated response to a revised wage offer.
Yesterday, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) voiced its concern over SA's public service threatening strikes at a time when the economy was "still not over consequences of the global downturn". It said that business conditions had not improved enough to accommodate even reasonable wage demands.
Unions, representing about 1-million of the public sector's 1,3-million workers, have been in a wage and housing allowance dispute with the government since the beginning of the year. Cosatu-affiliated public sector unions representing about 870 000 workers have been demanding an across-the-board pay rise of 8,5% and a R1000 housing allowance . The government is now offering a 7% wage increase and a R700 allowance.
National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union spokesman Sizwe Phamla told Business Day yesterday that more than 85% of its members --- in six of SA's nine provinces --- had rejected the government's latest offer.
