ANC Youth League president Julius Malema declared war on the SA Communist Party yesterday, saying the league "will beat the dog until the owner comes out".
He was speaking at the league's provincial elective conference in Grahamstown at which a supporter of his, Ayanda Matiti, was voted in as provincial chairman.
Malema was reacting to recent statements by Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande, who expressed concern at faction fighting within the youth body.
"The SACP has failed to take over the youth league. We will never surrender to Blade. He has never been a member, and has no understanding of what the youth league is [about]," Malema told cheering delegates.
"Their people have been receiving serious lashings in the youth league conferences. As we said before, we will beat the dog [the communists] until the owner [Nzimande] comes out.
"The owner is unhappy about the outcomes of the conferences . we are now ready for the owner. We are not afraid of the owner," Malema said.
Malema urged the league's newly elected Eastern Cape leadership not to embark on a purge, and said it was "important that you lead everybody".
He threw his weight behind Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, whom the youth body wants to become ANC secretary-general in 2012.
Speaking on the last day of the congress yesterday, Malema said the 2012 ANC national congress was about "generational mix". Mbalula was the embodiment of what the youth wanted.
He said the ANCYL would not be "disturbed by its detractors when it expressed itself on the succession debate".
"We are talking about our future. We don't need your permission to determine our future."
Malema said the "generational mix" the ANCYL campaigned for was about "what you [the youth] represent in the struggle".
"If you question Mbalula, and say he is young and does not qualify, why did you elect him to the national executive committee?" Malema said that Mbalula should consider resigning as a deputy minister "without power", and should focus on his work as head of ANC campaigns.
Malema's quest for a second term as president of the league received a major boost following a clean sweep of his allies at the congress.
Matiti beat Mawanda Ndakisa for the chairman's job by a sizeable margin. This was the fifth provincial congress at which Malema supporters have won the top dog positions. Daily Dispatch
