FAWU *FAWU News Release, 27 August 2010* *Eastern Cape KFC Workers on Strike*About 900 employees of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Port Elizabeth, East London, Queenstown, Grahamstown, Jeffreys Bay and King William's Town in the Eastern Cape have been engaged in a legal strike since 19 August 2010. The union and company are currently engaged in a dispute about wages and conditions of work.
Employees have initially demanded a 13th cheque, a guaranteed 40-hr week with no loss of pay and a 12 percent wage increase, but are prepared to take a ten percent offer at this stage. Workers are also aggrieved at the short time (disguised as flexi-time) and thinks this is just a way of avoiding to pay the minimum wage as determined by the hospitality sector.
The employer bluntly refuses to give workers a 13th cheque without any reasonable explanation. FAWU thinks that it is ridiculous that an employer of such a global stature refuses to pay their workers a decent wage bearing in mind their social responsibility.
FAWU further rejects the negative attitude and negotiations in bad faith of KFC seeing that it retracted an initial offer of 8.5% during a CCMA facilitation after trying to coerce workers by sms to return to work and accept this offer.
Workers are adamant that they will strike until their demands have been met. These employees are on their feet the whole day and at least deserve to earn a decent paycheck at the end of the month. No one should live on 250.00 rand per week in these trying times.
We believe social responsibility starts at home so KFC step up and give your employees a living wage!
The union is mobilizing support among the public to support workers in their strike.
