Receive greetings from the South African Students’ Congress in the Eastern Cape
As SASCO we have observed with complete dismay the lack of decisive leadership
on the parties concerned in relation to the wage deadlock. We are in full
support of the call by the workers for their wage to be increased. We further
support the rejection of the previous offers that have been offered by the
employer. We are together with the workers who are waiting for a better offer
by
the employer. We call on all the private sector unions to down the tools and
bring the exploiters companies to a stand still. The call is with particular
reference to the automotive industry (VW, GM and Daimler Chrysler) that
continues to exploit the worker in the province. We further support the unions
who are going to join the strike in due cause. Because the taxi industry
receives its business from the workers, we therefore are going to engage the
taxi union to join the workers on strike. If by Friday, the employer has not
come to the party, we will mobilize our members to join the strike. After the
strike, we will take our membership whom is perusing career in education and
BCur to assist in resuscitating the situation that has been caused by the
strike.
Rhodes
We have contested SRC elections at Rhodes university, the students have shown
an
overwhelming confidence in SASCO against the money that has been planted by DA.
DA has been buying students vote through organizing of parties with free
alcohol
and pizzas. Against all this students voted SASCO in many positions till DA had
to apply a demobilizing and delaying strategy where they were asking students
not to vote anymore. The elections did not meet a quorum by few votes. Even
when
the so called elections that did not meet quorum are convened again, we will
win
the election overwhelmingly. Students are eager for the transformation and have
chosen SASCO as the vehicle to a transformed institution. This confidence that
is shown by Rhodes makes to be further bold that we are going to deliver the
student vote to the ANC come the local government election.
NMMU
The NMMU University is hell-bent in vilifying and depoliticising the student
leadership. The Vice Chancellor has successfully created his kraal in that
institution where managers breathe his views and those who disagree are
isolated. This we cannot think of it as anything else but leading by autocracy.
The institution through EXCO of council has reviewed the electoral procedure
that had just been adopted last year. What is of great concern is that the
electoral procedure had not shown any bases why it had to be reviewed. SRC
Seats
at NMMU are contest by organizations and individuals. What is absurd about the
current review is that seat won by an organization are proposed to be shared
proportionally. We will not allow seats we have won as SASCO to be donated to
DA
student wing and COPE student wing as NMMU management is hell-bent in doing so.
Any organization that wants seats in SRC must be voted by students. We will
oppose this move and we are taking NMMU to court and we are adamant that we are
going to win the case as we have engage with IEC and DoE and we are cheerful
with their response because they agree with us.
ANC YL congress and it leadership
The ANC YL has just concluded its overdue adjourned and adjourned provincial
congress. We are happy that the congress has passed. What we however are
gravely
worried about is the anti-working class, anti-student activists and former
student activist’s tendency by this product of adjourned congress of YL Eastern
Cape. These are tendencies of people who associate election to office as being
brought close to government resources and loot tenders. As SASCO in the
province, we have noted the utterances by YL directed at the provincial
chairperson of the ANC and the department in which he is leading. It is thus
unfortunate that the elected chairperson of YL did not bother himself with
issues of youth emancipation, education, crime etc, but subjected the young
people to his factional behavior by lambasting at the leadership of ANC when he
had to accept responsibility to lead young people. This to us further
illustrates his deliberate disregard of the work that has been done to
resuscitate the department of health in the province. We agree that the
department is in deep corrupt activities by officials and it on those bases
that
support the suspension of those officials by the department. Others who are
corrupt must be unveiled and be suspended and jailed.
Successful removal of the SRC president of UFH
We have successfully removed the clanger and the students’ resource plunderer
in
the student governance of UFH. He sold students to the highest bidder. He
deliberately did not attend meeting were crucial decisions impacting students
were going to be taken. During his short lived presidency, UFH management
approved a 20% yearly increase residences through a public private partnership.
This when presented is meant to assist refurbish residences, but in actual fact
it is exploiting the students of UFH. The SASCO candidate replacing Lizo Jim is
taking office on Wednesday the 2nd of September. We have given her together
with
the entire SRC a clear programme to resuscitate the situation.
