SACP NORTH WEST OPPOSES THE RE - NAMING OF THE NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE Monday, 04 October 2010
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the North West province rejects with contempt it deserve the intentions of re-naming the North West University Mafikeng campus after Lucas Mangope. According to us these intentions are in the main are trying to promote and resuscitate the political life of one of the worse puppets of the apartheid system our country has ever had. It cannot be correct that individuals whose hands are full of the blood of the innocent people of our country should be honored for the crimes against humanity they committed. For the majority of our people Mangope represents an enemy of democracy and freedom we fought for. As the SACP in the North West we are more than shocked by these aims and thus we call on the Minister of Higher Education and General Secretary of the SACP comrade Blade Nzimande to intervene decisively on this matter. As the SACP in the North West we equally call on the progressive Youth Alliance led in this context by the Young Communist League (YCLSA) Ufasimba, to reject by all necessary means this re-naming as it seek to undermine our democratic dispensation which so many people paid for with their lives, in the main it is on the basis that there was no proper consultation with all stakeholders including, campuses which are related to the university, the student formations, the workers and others in this process. Education in our view is about developing leaders and that on its own cannot be associated with the enemies of the people like Mangope . This attitude by the university management seem to continue with the tendency of managing the institutions in a Bantustan manner – typical of Mangope style of not respecting other people and institutions treating the university as though it is owned by individuals or groupings.
