*On the developments at the SABC*

The SACP welcomes the statement by the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Communications (PCC). We particularly welcome the PCC's stance and insistence on good corporate governance at the SABC.

The SACP has for a while now been concerned about the state of affairs at the SABC and the behaviour of the SABC board which appeared to be no different from the previously disbanded board.

We hope that the PCC will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of this seemingly perpetual instability. Equally we welcome the PCC's commitment to fill vacant positions on the board with speed.

We believe that this will go a long way towards saving the image and functionality of this important institution for the workers and the poor of our country.

The SACP has also been concerned that the networks of the liberal offensive against our democracy and its vultures, opportunistically joined by an ultra-left in disarray, are mobilising to capture the SABC for narrow, and often white, elite interests.

In addition, the SACP, has of late been observing how the competing class interests of the liberal offensive, remnants of the 1996 class project, and the new tendency in our movement, are all jostling to try and capture this national asset - the SABC - for often narrow factionalised and racialised class interests.

We call upon the workers and the poor of our country to remain vigilant in order to ensure that the SABC serves the interests of the overwhelming majority of our people.
