*DENOSA 6th National Congress Speaks*

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa held its 6th National Congress over the weekend of the 22nd- 24th October 2010 at Forever Resorts in Bela Bela, Limpopo.

The congress discussed and resolved on key issues in nursing, health in general and on socio economic matters. The congress also elected new leadership as follows:

           * *Dorothy Matebeni* - President
           * *O**lga Makhubela-Nkondo* - 1st Deputy President
           * *ThandekaMsibi* - 2nd Deputy President
           * *John Tladi* - Treasurer

It was resolved that a pilot study must be done to determine placement of nurse education taking into consideration the new qualification framework in preparation for the nurses summit in January 2010- which DENOSA fully supports. Furthermore DENOSA calls for nursing colleges to be declared institutions of higher learning. The congress also calls for the introduction of clinical departments to strengthen integration of practice and theory and that nurse curriculum be Primary Health Care biased.

DENOSA calls for the South African Nursing Council (SANC) to come up with an accredited post basic course on HIV and AIDS. We further reiterate our commitment in the continuing fight against this pandemic.

DENOSA calls on government to address gross shortage in midwifery and is of the firm view that the status quo in terms of nursing and midwifery training remains.

As an organisation we support the healthy lifestyle campaign initiated by the health department. We believe that this should go a long way in decreasing the impact of chronic diseases. We will also revamp our 3 for 50 project (DENOSA wellness project) to deal with this challenge.

The congress also calls for the urgent conclusion of a minimum service level agreement for healthcare workers.

DENOSA is of the view that Caregivers should be appointed and that other vacant posts should be filled to address gross- staff shortages in health. We further demand the conclusion of all Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) matters and we will be engaging the health department on the human resource document.

DENOSA reiterated its support for the implementation of the National Nursing Strategy and calls for the acceleration of the process. We further re-affirm that the all- important National Health Insurance be implemented without any delay.
