The Times
*The Sunday Times available in isiZulu from November 7th* *Times LIVE, Johannesburg, 29 October 2010*The Sunday Times, South Africa's biggest weekend paper, will publish in a language other than English for the first time in its 104-year history when the first Zulu edition launches on Sunday, November 7.
The newspaper, formally called the Sunday Times Zulu Edition, will be distributed throughout KwaZulu-Natal with the largest footprint being Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the Zululand district.
This is the culmination of a project led by Avusa Media editor-in-chief Mondli Makhanya.
"We are extremely proud to be making a contribution to the growth of an indigenous language. This in no small way contributes towards us living up to our claim to be "The paper for the people." In a democratic South Africa we can play a positive role in providing access to information in various languages with this edition meeting the needs of our Zulu-speaking readers," says Makhanya.
Sunday Times editor Ray Hartley says: "The phenomenal growth of Zulu-language titles in KwaZulu-Natal is testimony to this. The marriage of the Sunday Times content with the first language of choice for these readers will be a winning formula".
The Zulu edition will carry the best of the Sunday Times national news section, sport, opinion, business and lifestyle copy in a single section. The edition will also be strong on KwaZulu-Natal provincial politics, municipal news, celebrity news and sport.
The paper will endeavour to initiate conversations about issues that should be a priority on every KwaZulu-Natal reader's agenda.
Makhanya says that this development is a vote of confidence in the future of the newspapers.
"The message we are sending through this venture is that print is here to stay and will remain the lodestar of the media universe for a long, long time."
