*Vavi set for a rap over the knuckles from ANC* *Moipone Malefane, The Times, Johannesburg, 31 October 2010*Cosatu leader Zwelinzima Vavi is likely to come under fire from the ANC when its national working committee meets tomorrow.
The NWC, which is a sub-structure of the ANC national executive committee, is to discuss resolutions taken at a Civil Society Conference convened by Cosatu this week.
It is believed that a number of high-ranking ANC leaders are unhappy about scathing comments that were made by Vavi and Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini at the gathering, as well as some of the resolutions passed by the conference.
In a statement issued on Thursday, soon after the conference ended, ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu promised a "comprehensive" response by the NWC.
ANC and SA Communist Party leaders have privately expressed unhappiness that Cosatu convened a summit with the Treatment Action Committee, religious formations and non-governmental organisations but did not invite its alliance partners.
But Vavi has defended the decision: "Had we invited the ANC or SACP, other (political) parties would have expected to be invited," he said. "We kept the gathering clean and did not involve political parties."
Ahead of the conference, which was attended by about 60 organisations, there was talk in the ANC alliance ranks that the federation was trying to create a new "United Democratic Front" - a reference to the pro-ANC extra-parliamentary movement that led the internal resistance to apartheid in the 1980s.
But Cosatu leaders are adamant that the initiative does not mean that they want out of the ANC-led alliance.
Vavi confirmed to the Sunday Times that, "Some people think that a workers' party can take the issue of new growth path forward." But, he said, "Cosatu believes the Alliance will do that. Sometimes it is difficult but we always succeed."
