*Douala Appeal for Côte d'Ivoire *

*African Intellectuals Take a Stand*

 *23 December 2010*

While the re-election of Laurent Gbagbo gives rise to an unacceptable bellicose
interference called "international community" (France, USA, European Union
and United Nations and their slaves on the black continent), Cameroon and
African intellectuals, concerned about the independence and the sovereignty
of African states, are calling for solidarity with those fighting for these
goals right now to Côte d'Ivoire, and opposition to the recolonization of
Africa by the West.

In 2002, Côte d'Ivoire was the victim of an attempted coup that turned into
an armed rebellion in the north. This attempted coup cause the deaths of
about 10,000 civilians.

After several resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations had
no effect, notably on the requirement for the disarmament of the rebels, the
Head of State, President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire Laurent Gbagbo,
launched a "direct dialogue" in 2007 to end the political and military
crisis facing the country since 2002.

To this end, the Ivorian government has organized and supported, alone, the
cost of "the most expensive elections in the world" (120 billion CFA francs
paid to the French company Sagem), which were then followed by the illegal
and clandestine preliminary announcement in the campaign headquarters of one
of candidates for election, by Youssouf Bakayoko, chairman of the
administrative body, the Independent Electoral Commission; and then by the
proclamation of final results by the Constitutional Council, in accordance
with the constitution of the sovereign Republic of Cote d'Ivoire.

Convinced that one cannot build peace and democracy without respect for
institutions of a state and recognizing that sustainable development of
African countries necessarily entails the peace,

African intellectuals, mindful of:

- The UN Charter, Article 2.1, 2.2 and 2.4 concerning the sovereignty and
institutions of each Member State;

- The Constitutive Act of the African Union, which establishes the sovereign
institutions in respect of Article 3 (b) and the illegality of taking power
by force in Article 4 (p);

- The Constitution and the institutions which the people of Côte d'Ivoire
had freely adopted,

Support the institutions of the Republic and the people of Côte d'Ivoire who
fight for respect of sovereignty and:

Launch a strong appeal to the Secretary General of UN Ban Ki Moon and
President of France Sarkozy, requiring them to act in accordance with the
rules governing the United Nations, namely respect for the sovereignty of
its constituent States and therefore respect the institutions of the State
of Côte d'Ivoire.

The only crime committed by Laurent Gbagbo is to have dared to oppose the
outrageous attempt at recolonization of Côte d'Ivoire.

We urge all Africans, despite our different ideological preferences, to
stand firm and resolute in this shameful attempted re-subordination of Côte
d'Ivoire.

Our continent, Africa, cannot and must not negotiate its sovereignty and
freedom. Thus we decided, in the names of the founding fathers of our
independence, to reject interference that corrupts the future of our nations
and our peoples.

In full sovereignty, we intellectuals from Africa commit to deny that the
concept of “international community” and the UN are to be the crucible of
the end of history.
