POPCRU condemns unilateral changing of shift system by Regional Commissioner in
KwaZulu-Natal
We are indicating that as POPCRU that we concerned with intransigence attitude
displayed by the Kwazulu-Natal Department of Correctional Services Regional
Commissioner with the imposition of the shift system. A GPSSBC Agreement
No.2/2009 was signed that gave birth to the implementation of the 7 days work
week establishment.
However, our members experienced a new 12 hour shift which did not consider the
contextual factors our members continue to work under harsh conditions,
including under-staffing, high inmates’ population and dangerous working
conditions.
As POPCRU we took the matter to the Labour Court with a settlement instructing
DCS to discontinue with the system. However, the actions that followed from the
employer were suspensions and/or application of leave without pay by the
employer.
We demand the employer within a reasonable period to;
· Reverse the Leave without pay imposed on members,
· Lifting of suspension of our members,
· The Regional Commissioner must stop victimizing our members and
respect progressive labour laws of this country, including respect for Labour
Court Outcomes, and
· Concentrate on DCS Priorities to enhance the safety of our members
while on duty, against structural challenges of under-staffing and
over-crowding
we currently experience.
POPCRU calls for the Minister of Correctional Services to intervene on the
matter.
