PSI Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Meeting is underway in Gauteng
Public Services International Affiliated Trade Unions in Southern Africa has
continued to consolidate Decent Work Agenda in the Sub-Region through the
holding of a Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Meeting on the 08-09th March 2011
at Randburg Towers, attended by South Africa,
Zambia,Botswana,Swaziland,Malawi,Mozambique,Angola,Namibia,Rodgrigues,Mauritius
and Zimbabwe.
Key to the meeting was the sharing of experiences and challenges in the public
service on the implementation of the Decent Work Agenda as enshrined in the
International Labour Organization’s strategic objectives. And the delegation
was
amongst others to interrogate why it is difficult to defend Public Sector
Rights
across the Sub-Region?
Some of the key focus areas were on the following challenges;
* Public Sector Reforms,
* Privatization and commercialization of the public sector,
* Corruption and lack of transparency, and
* Poor service delivery
And all these commonly experienced challenges cross cutting in the Sub-Region
were to be measured against the imperatives of creating jobs in the public
service, guaranteeing rights at work, extending social protection, promoting
social dialogue and enhancing gender equality.
The meeting was able to interact with ILO Senior Specialist on Workers’
Activities on Decent Work, Ms. Inviolata Chinyangarara, who shared perspectives
on consolidating a decent work agenda to fight and protect workers and human
rights. And key strategies that were put forward was around enhancing Trade
Union Education and Training, deepening Trade Union understanding of social
dialogue, advocating for law reforms on unionization and Trade Union Rights,
consolidate trade union campaigns on environmental issues, political issues
that
impact on workers, inputting on essential services guidelines and enhancing the
usage of ILO Complaints mechanism to report public sector violations.
Advocating for workers rights for change in the Sub-Region in particular and
elsewhere is a task that must be fought with verve to unite the working class.
And the Deputy President, Cde Thozama Mantashe from NEHAWU was unanimously
appointed as the Sub-Regional Titular for PSI.
PSI is a global Trade Union Federation that works in cooperation with the
International Union Confederation [ITUC], the Council of Global Unions and the
European Federation of Public Service Unions [EPSU] to defend rights and
interests of Public Sector Workers and to promote quality public services
worldwide.
