*CWU IS SHOCKED BY VODACOM’S INTENTION TO RETRENCH WORKERS.* *06 April 2011*
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has learned with shock that Vodacom, which claims to be red, intends to retrench about one thousand workers. As CWU, we are not charmed by the terms that Vodacom uses to confuse workers such as “Mutual Separation” and “Outsourcing” in pursuit of an agenda to retrench workers. In simple terms the words “Mutual Separation” and “Outsourcing” simply means retrenching in our understanding and by doing this, Vodacom has, in our view, decided to go against the call by the President of the ANC and the country to create decent jobs. We have also learned with dismay that Vodacom wants to convert some workers into labour brokers. This is clear arrogance, disrespect and brutality of the first order ignoring the call made by the majority of our people during public hearings on labour brokering to totally ban labour brokers. CWU calls on the Minister of Labour, Cde Mildred Oliphant to be sensitive to the call by the masses of our country to ban labour brokers and to discard the regulation-of-labour-brokers mentality. Workers are the pillars of the economy in the country and the world in general, and as such they deserve better than being treated like commodities. * * *Contact:* *Matankana Mothapo, National Spokesperson - 0827590900* -- You are subscribed.
