Police beef up security with 24-hour roadblocks

Police and Correctional Services officers burned the midnight oil and operated roadblocks 24 hours a day since Thursday along the country’s main roads.

Also, members of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) continued to guard the overhead bridges along the Manzini/Mbabane Highway.

Security forces have also been deployed along the streets of the capital city, where they were visible since yesterday morning.

The tightening of security comes a few days before the proposed April 12 protest march, which government says is illegal.

Commuters were inconvenienced during rush hour when they came across long traffic that stretched from Mvutshini to Ezulwini.

Ordered

Every bus was stopped and commuters were ordered out, where they formed long queues before they were searched.

While the stop and search went on, armed officers were ready for any contingencies.

Commuters contained their displeasure and only voiced them after the public transport had moved from the police.

There were four roadblocks along the Mbabane-Manzini highway – two on each side. One was at Mvutshini, another at Lobamba, another at Mfabantfu and the last at Mhlaleni.

When evening came, those officers stationed along the highways were aided by the street lights, while in other areas such as Mehlwabovu, they had to use power generators for lighting.

There were four roadblocks between the Nhlangano-Mhlaleni road, otherwise known as Yithi Abantu highway.

Some of the vehicles used by the police were inscribed ‘Bomb Disposal Unit’.

Kombis operating between the Mbabane-Manzini highway also suffered an inconvenience because they were deterred from overloading, as they normally do.

Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Wendy Hleta said she would not comment on why there were so many roadblocks because the Police Commissioner Isaac Magagula had called a press conference tomorrow where he would address it.
