POPCRU condemns the violation of a right to protest by Swazis
The development of police brutality on the masses in Swaziland reminds all
South
Africans of the harsh times during the apartheid era. The happening teaches
that
any government can turn to become a bad government when it challenged to change
its repressive practices.
The 1976 security crackdown by the apartheid regime triggered the most serious
revolt in the South African history that laid a foundation of the freedom we
now
enjoy. By that time the oppressor was casting aside his moralistic cloak and
not
only clinging to power but using a divide-and-rule strategy that nearly
ploughed
doubt amongst the citizens.
On the occasion of the 12th April 2011 March to Fredom, POPCRU calls upon all
Swazis to defy the banning of the march by the regime and make their intentions
clear; to end the repressive Tinkundla system led by a despot-Mswati.
POPCRU Founding President, Cde Gregory Rockman at the height of police
brutality
in the country around 1989 said “Our people have been oppressed enough. It’s
time somebody comes forward and speaks about police brutality. There are
hundreds of policemen like me, who see their credibility in the communities
they
serve undermined by the actions of riot police. But they are scared to talk
because regulations bind them. I’m not willing for the regulations to bind me
any further. I’m defying them”.
We are calling the police in Swaziland to stand up for what right and stop
brutalizing their fellow country men and women. And to release all arrested
comrades.
Forward with the Unbanning of Political Parties!
Forward to a Peoples’ Police Service!
