*YCLSA Statement on Labour Court Judgement in relation to Ivor Blumenthal & Others* 04 May 2011 For Immediate Release The YCL notes the outcome of the Labour Court on the reconfiguration of the Services SETA in relation to its Council and the broad vision that the SETAs in general should undertake. Although we respect the judgement by the courts, we remain supportive of the general thrust by the Ministry in driving SETAs towards government’s overall skills development approach and their contribution towards job creation. The YCL further notes concerns around a broad consultative process required with all the stakeholders concerned, and believe that this should be done as a matter of urgency. As the YCL, we are however appalled by the fact that some of the stakeholders who were taken aboard on the broad reconfiguration strategy, and have agreed to its overall thrust, are now reneging simply because they do not agree with the individuals appointed. The YCL calls on the Ministry to put in place corrective legal measurers that will enable government to play an active role in ensuring that SETA’s are driven towards government’s vision of job creation, skills development and changing the skills landscape in our country. Millions of unemployed and unskilled young people cannot remain excluded from skills development initiatives simply because corrupt tenderpreneurs at the helm of SETAs want to keep their fingers in the cookie jar. We will monitor the legal process and ensure that this ultimately serves the youth of our country, and not certain individuals.
