*Young Communist League of South Africa on Hendrik Verwoerd statue * 06 May 2011
The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] has learnt with displeasure the unnecessary noise as led by the Democratic Alliance, FF Plus and Afrikaner organizations over the removal of the Hendrik Verwoerd statue. Our view is that such a move was long overdue and should not be used for election fortune. To us Hendrik Verwoerd is not and will never be a hero of our people. This is a man who was at the helm of the state when the anti-Apartheid movements were banned. He ensured that our leaders were prosecuted during the Rivonia Trial. His autobiography is written on the blood of our people. Waking up every day seeing his ugly face decorating our land only serves to remind us of the bitter past. The past that denied us our birthright to freedom and self-determination. The past that he ardently helped to build within the auspices of racial oppression and working class exploitation for the benefit of the white minority, who dispossessed us of our land and enslaved our forebears in the mines and farms. We call upon the Department of Arts and Culture to speed up the process of renaming our major roads, places and facilities in towns and cities that were named after this apartheid monster. It can only be a shame, disgrace and insult to our democracy to have the statue of Hendrik Verwoerd, while Chris Hani District in Eastern Cape does not have a bust of this selfless leader.
