*NUMSA STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF SABC SENIOR JOURNALIST KGOMOTSO SEBETSO*

*9 May 2011*

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (*Numsa*) mourns the
untimely departure of SABC senior journalist par excellence Kgomotso
Sebetso.

A journalist Cadre’s voice is no more; his face will shine on our TV screens
not anymore; his revered reporting skills we will yearn forever; his un-bias
reporting will be a lesson for many. A true journalist Cadre has been lost
in Kgomotso Sebetso.

Sebetso dies at a critical time of our struggle of building an activist
media for people’s power that is in sync with the daily realities and
struggles of the working class and the poor. Sebetso was an embodiment of an
activist journalist Cadre in the newsroom that understood that news
transmitted to our society should be about contesting the hegemony of the
ruling class in favour of the working class.

Sebetso’s grasp or understanding of political developments of the today made
him to be far above his peers.

We find solace in that Sebetso joins the galaxy of other great journalist
cadres in the land of the departed such as Ruth First, Govan Mbeki, Edwin
Mofutsanyane, Bessie Head and countless others who died fighting for a free
and people’s media.

We send our sincere condolences to his colleagues, family and friends. Death
shall not be proud!
