"His infinitive (sic) and razor-sharp contribution to Marxist thoughts and
progressive ideas is immeasurable and surpasses that of his generation,"
union spokesman Castro Ngobese said in a statement.

He was "one of the most revered Marxist intellectuals to be produced by the
ANC-led Alliance".

The degree was a call to the ANC and higher education minister to "free it
from the dominant ideas of the ruling class", Ngobese said.

The University of Fort Hare awarded Cronin an honorary degree on Tuesday
morning to acknowledge, recognise and appreciate his work through the years.

Cronin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cape Town and
a Master of Arts degree from the Sorbonne, Paris, France, both awarded with
distinction. He lectured at the University of Cape Town from 1973 to 1976
