*SAMWU Press Statement, 4 July 2011 * ** ** *SAMWU supports NUMSA strike and calls for decent living wage*The largest Local Government Union SAMWU supports the NUMSA nationwide strike in the metal and engineering sectors. We strongly believe the demands workers are calling for are both reasonable and necessary.
In a country were half of households suffer from food poverty, workers deserve decent salaries. Contrary to what some analysts have been saying -- we believe there is nothing wrong with demanding double digit increases. In fact with such grave poverty witnessed in our country, workers ought to demand nothing less than double digit increases.
The Naledi research report presented to the COSATU Central Committee held last week, revealed that monthly wages of workers declined by 23% per annum between 1995 and 2005.
In the face of these glaring statistics employers must be forced to concede to the workers demands of a meagre 13% wage increase, a two-year wage agreement, banning labour brokers, one day testing for all diseases and a 20 per cent night shift allowance.
SAMWU calls upon all workers, across all sectors, to stand up against monopoly capital and ensure that workers in this country earn a decent living wage. We also congratulate our federation COSATU and all of its affiliates for adopting progressive resolutions at its Central Committee to launch the important and much needed campaign for a decent living wage.
