Support and interest is growing. The Campaign links two key crises in South Africa, climate change and unemployment, and provides a range of solutions that will address both Climate Jobs are decent jobs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen community resilience to the threats of climate change. Roll-out of renewable energy such as wind, solar water heaters and biogas digesters will not only dramatically reduce South Africa’s heavy carbon footprint, but also create many jobs. A pro-people public transport system, energy efficient construction and retrofitting of homes and offices, transformation of agriculture also provide many strong opportunities to address climate change while creating new decent jobs. Many of the solutions to climate change are highly beneficial for poor and vulnerable people, and are effectively about implementing good development. In December this year, South Africa will host the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban. This provides an opportunity for Popular Social Movements, Trade Union Federations, CBOs, FBO’s, Rural and Farm Workers Organisations, Women and Youth and Climate Justice Movements to demand that meaningful solutions are adopted and implemented by the worlds’ governments.
