ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema faces disciplinary action as the ANC prepares to press charges against him for bringing the party into disrepute.

This arose after a scheduled meeting between the ANC leadership and the Youth League was yesterday abruptly called off.

“The reason to postpone this meeting was the realisation by the meeting that some of the issues that were to be raised with the ANCYL leadership are transgressions that may lead to disciplinary action,” the ANC said in a statement yesterday.

This would give the ANC enough time to consider Malema’s “transgressions and violations of the party’s disciplinary code” an official said.

The meeting was long planned and was originally set out to allow ANC national officials and the newly elected leadership of the ANCYL to discuss internal matters.

However, the meeting was overshadowed by events last week in the wake of controversial statements made by Malema which placed the ANC and its Youth League at loggerheads.

The ANC gave Malema a tongue-lashing last week over his comments on unseating Botswana’s government as the ANCYL seek a regime change in that country.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe confirmed in a statement yesterday the highly anticipated meeting was postponed after they had realised that issues on the agenda were of such a serious nature and amounted to “transgressions that may lead to disciplinary action”.
