*Press Statement*
** August 11, 2011 *YCL welcomes the formation of a government task force to deal with crimes against homosexuality * ** The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] welcomes the formation of a government task force that focuses on combating crimes against gays and lesbians in the country. The formation of the task force was long overdue considering the alarming rate of crime against the homosexual community. Homophobia is currently on the rise; gays and lesbians have been victims of gruesome and irrational attacks by intolerant members of the community. In recent past we have witnessed a wave of “Corrective rapes” that seek to “transform” lesbians into acting “straight” or as women. It is because of these barbaric acts that we view the launch of this Task force as paramount; hence we call for immediate implementation of its assignment. In the same token we wish to resuscitate our position as the YCLSA that human rights can never be without the recognition of gays and lesbian rights to human dignity. All law enforcement agencies should vigorously continue in their responsibility to preserve these rights and reprimand those who dourly violate them. This task force must concentrate more in townships where many cases of crimes against homosexual community have been reported. As YCL we will vigorously campaign for the rights of gay and lesbian community to be upheld and respected.
