Too many no-shows at ANC nationalisation symposium

Sapa, Sunday Times, Johannesburg, 13 August 2011

The ANC symposium on the nationalisation of mines in the North West was postponed on Saturday due to poor attendance, the congress said.

"No proper preparations were done for the event," said the provincial secretary Kabelo Mataboge.

He said they were not blaming the Bojanala region for the poor attendance, but they would as a provincial executive committee in the near future co-ordinate the event.

About 50 people waited for three hours before they were told that the symposium had been cancelled.

Due to speak at the event was ANC Youth League president Julius Malema, Congress of SA Trade Union general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and Bheki Sibiya from the Chamber of Mines.

Mataboge said they were told Malema would not attend because of the poor attendance, while Vavi and Sibiya were unable to attend due to family commitments.

Mataboge said the symposium would be held on a later date still to be announced in the Bojanala district.
