Media Release
08th September 2011
Crime reduction is a revolutionary act done by men and women in blue
POPCRU, largest progressive Trade Union within the Criminal Justice has
welcomed the release of the Crime Statistics for the financial year 2010/2011
by the South African Police Services [SAPS] as a revolutionary development to
consolidate the implementation of government five  priorities, amongst others;
the fight against crime and corruption.
We have appreciated what the Minister of Police,Mr.Nathi Mthethwa said that
"freedom does not create itself, but it is propelled by men and women. And
Police Officers has made the right to safety and security a reality".
We have noted the superlative degree of speed on the reduction of murder rate
in 2009/2010 by 8,6% and currently it stand at 6,5%,and this was followed by a
reduction of attempt murder ratio by 12,2% during this current period.
What is striking after the women’s month efforts to enhance eradication of the
scourge of abuse on women and children; we have noted a decrease of sexual
offenses ratio by 4, 4% in the same period.
The police visibility in all our streets has resulted in public and street
robbery decreasing by almost 10, 2%, with only 6 594 cases reported. Carjacking
decreased by 23, 6%, which vividly displays that the high-way patrols are
bearing fruits.
What is worrisome though, is the increasing cases of driving under the
influence of alcohol or drugs with 4, 5% between the 2009/2010 and
2010/2011.these negative development puts a lot of strain as many bread winners
are lost in the process, thus creating pains in many families.
These strides clearly paints a picture that police officer are always available
on every village, farm, town, city, suburb and/or any other area during the
time of need.
These entire breakthroughs will be non-existent without the men and women in
blue and all other law enforcement agencies, who continue to be the reliable
public service cadreship responsible to combat and prevent commission of
crimes.
However, it is regrettable that we have lost almost 60 police officer this year
alone and we bank on the implementation of the progressive outcomes on lobbying
community based organizations and other business partners, to enhance digestion
of policing as a societal responsibility.
The building of vibrant community policing forums and street committees are
vehicles which should be fully explored to cement community policing model we
have embraced with the democratic breakthrough.
POPCRU reiterates its stance against any form of corruption and criminal
activities which continue to undermine the tenacious efforts the men and women
in blue are doing to create a free, safe and secure South Africa for all who
live in it.
We salute the men and women in blue across all workplaces!
