The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) would like to offer its
deepest and sincerest condolences to the families of the eleven teachers and
learners who died in a taxi accident in Zeerust, North West, this morning.
We also offer our condolences to Naptosa – the union the teachers belonged
to. ****

The teachers lost their lives when their taxi collided with a bakkie head-on
and then caught fire.
****
Such death is not only a tragedy to the families of the deceased but to the
nation and our education system as a whole. We have lost the most valuable
and yet undervalued people in our society – people who are entrusted with
the most important task of imparting knowledge to shape the minds of our
children and prepare them for a better future.****
** **
To quote Ever Garrison, “A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets
of curiosity, knowledge and wisdom in the pupils.”****
** **
We appeal to authorities to investigate the cause of the accident and bring
the perpetrators to book.****
