![]() We don't support fame-seeking Julius Lots of people seem puzzled that Julius Malema received substantial support from the SACP, Cosatu and ANC regarding his hate speech court ruling by Judge Colin Lamont. What must be made clear is that the song is a product of a popular liberation struggle led by the ANC. As a result, the history of the ANC can under no circumstances be narrated in full without reference to its liberation songs. That would be a travesty of justice and abortion of history. That explains why the entire liberation movement came out with guns blazing in defence of the song. Heroes of our struggle - like Chris Hani, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki and many others - sang that song. Lodging an appeal against Judge Lamont's ruling is resistance against an attempt to edit out our history, and that does not amount to blanket support for Malema's wayward conduct. The people's song was opportunistically hauled to the courts thanks to loose cannon Malema, whose penchant for fame has caused the ANC tribulation. Challenging the ruling is done only to preserve what we consider a part of our heritage, nothing more, nothing less. Malema and his troops must not misconstrue this gesture.
