Are the Death Toll on roads, miners death in mines and police officers killings
in the line of duty, a skill issue or not?
Pedagogues and androgogue have gathered today at Emperors Palace to interrogate
the education and training landscape in the current conjuncture. And indeed
bold question were posed on where are we, how to consolidate a hegemonic tone
to bring changes in our citizenry.
The critical issue on coordination for success in the education landscape
entails tackling the gaps between basic education, vocational training, the job
market and life-long learning.
And such imperatives entail synergizing the role of skills providers and
employers and all other social partners.
The conference was convened to, amongst others;
* Deepen understanding of pre-school system and quality councils,
* Deepen understanding of the role of sector education and training
authorities and skills development funding models,
* Strengthen skills development in a post-school system, including work
integrated learning,
* Promote youth, women and people with disability in productive for
inclusive growth,
* Fast-track artisan development and international best practice on
skills development, and lastly
* Develop skills for the growth of the economy and creating employment
opportunities.
Expanding and improving capacity of Further Education and Training [FET’s] and
other workplace learning has been identified as one of the best possible means
of responding to the dire skills in the country.
The Minister of Higher Education and Training emphasized the importance of
‘sustainable skills development for sustainable economic development’, with
more attention to enhance institutional capacities of all institution of
learning, including building driving schools capacities to genuinely train
people how to drive well, to polish police colleges tenacity in empowering
trainees with that split second quality to combat crime in the country in
particular.
However, many learners are still left idling even after completing their FET’s
offering which possess doubts on parents on the importance of sending their
kids to these institutions which are in many instances are accessible and/or
affordable as compared to many universities.
Attitudinal changes must be impacted on our communities to diffuse the
stereotypes on undermining the vocational education as inferior, with many
choosing to stay at home for a season at home after Matric to access a
university of their choice.
Every working place must become a centre of learning, with foreseeable
achievements on; empowering people to develop their full potential, raise
productivity, contribute to innovation, reduce social inequalities and pave a
way for better employment and lastly higher wages.
Investing in Skills to secure a better future for all, is a revolutionary
undertaking which can no longer be postponed!
And the conversation continues ion commissions and what is your view?
