POPCRU congratulates SADTU on its 21st Anniversary POPCRU, the largest Trade Union in the Criminal Justice wishes to congratulate SADTU, the largest Trade Union in the Education Sector on its 21st Anniversary, since the 06th October 1990 launch after a revolutionary amalgamation of fragmented teacher organizations within the country. SADTU has over the years amplified the emphasis on the maintaining of the umbilical cord between community struggles and the working class struggles. It was educators during the dark days of apartheid, who made the slogan of COSAS ‘Each One, Teach One’ alive, when it was unfashionable to use education as another instrument to dislodge the colonialism of a special type. SADTU was one of progressive organizations who supported POPCRU in 1993 when members marched against ill-treatment by the powers be, based on the quest to make the statement that ‘The Police belong to the People’. Many students were dislodged from their studies, with casspirs roaming around almost all townships and it was teachers in particular, who shepherded young people to fight against the policies of separate development. A strong message during that time was that police officers must disobey instructions to kill people in the townships, with many educators playing a decisive and advisory role which finally led to the dawn of a free South Africa in 1994. Many difficulties still prevalent within the education and as POPCRU we bank on revolutionary Trade Unions such as SADTU, to continue to provide a fertile ground for the fermentation of an alternative path towards a, ‘Free, Quality Public Education for All’. And education will become a vital catalyst for such ideological clarity-development, with more emphasis to entrench institutional memory on such tenacious strides the Trade Union Movement has achieved to date. Transformation of South Africa and the world we live will never be un-led and has never being un-led and we wish SADTU to continue to be present in all farms, hamlet, townships, cities, suburb and informal settlements, to hegemonies the young generation on the fight against the triple oppression;poverty, unemployment and inequalities amongst and within our society. The current conditions of living in the society in general and on the workplaces in particular, vividly portrays a picture that we must fight the scourge of exploitation of workers, and other related burdens such as the rising food prices, electricity, land and all related commodities. We reiterate our support on achieving a de-construction of the eduction, training and skills development landscape to humanize our society, and reclaim our hegemony. POPCRU beliefs educators like any other worker are members of the community before they are workers, and therefore we cannot sit on the periphery of political decision-making processes. POPCRU reiterate that education is a two-way process in which it implies that it is dialogue between teachers and students ,where both learn, both question, both reflect and both participate in meaning-making’, and we therefore urge all role-players to take education as a societal responsibility, than a ‘blame-game’ when things goes wrong. POPCRU adjures all stakeholders to support all educators to continue to nurture learners to become responsible and candid future leaders. Education; one of the government priority areas, must continue to be used to unlock, develop, mould and awaken the natural talents of the nation! VIVA SADTU! Happy Birthday!
