Forked-tongue on Human Rights Abuses is counter-productive and revolutionary
uneven!
The ink has dried on a resolution demanding the US to end its embargo against
CUBA which was adopted by an overwhelming majority in the United Nations [UN]
Assembly, and yet it’s regarded as ‘business as usual’. And POPCRU has welcomed
the successful demonstrations held on Friday at the US Embassy in relation with
the demand for unconditional release of the CUBAN FIVE.
How long will this blasphemy be upheld in the international politics? And me
thought we will be joined by Amnesty International? And after perusing from
their website, a puzzling capturing reads ‘There is no Amnesty International
presence in this country’
No wonder that despite huge media presence, the stories did not occupy the main
stories counting of Friday….Perhaps, editors missed the sound bites! Shots!
And/or the quotes! And a pull-out of some media houses suggest that 'US strings'
were pulled against such a coverage....but the struggle is inevitable!
Thanks that Business Day covered the story and uploaded the video for all
capitalists to see what progressive forces are saying in South Africa!
Me thought a demand for dignity for all cuts across barriers crafted by
ideological disposition or whatever and now concludes that supporting
humanitarian cases all over the world, are indeed politicised! Period!
The Amnesty International's 2011 report reveals ‘a world in which people
continue to challenge oppression despite the powerful array of repressive
measures used against them. It shows that the communities most affected by
human rights abuses are the real driving force behind the human rights
struggle’.
The only capturing worth reading about is about the negative impact of the
economic embargo which reads ‘The US embargo continued to affect the economic,
social and cultural development of the Cuban people and in particular the most
vulnerable groups.
According to the UN Population Fund, treatments for children and young people
with bone cancer and for patients suffering from cancer of the retina were not
readily available because they were commercialized under US patents. The
embargo also affected the procurement of antiretroviral drugs used to treat
children with HIV/AIDS. Under the terms of the US embargo, medical equipment
and medicines manufactured under US patents cannot be sold to the Cuban
government’.
Perhaps, Amnesty International South African may provide clearer appraisal on
whether the CUBAN FIVE Campaign does not fit into the brief of AI activities in
this continent as it is with the rest of other continents. The stance that,
‘Amnesty International does not currently have a presence in this [CUBA]
country’. Is deafening!

We have argued that Obama is an individual leading a rife imperialist system in
which Neo-Liberal Agenda runs deep and such a stance [may] be affirmed by the
decisions which are still been taken such as,‘In September, US President Barack
Obama renewed the extension of economic and financial sanctions against Cuba as
provided for in the Trading With the Enemy Act. In August, he relaxed travel
restrictions on academic, religious and cultural groups under the
“people-to-people” policy. For the 19th consecutive year, a resolution calling
on the USA to end its embargo against Cuba was adopted by an overwhelming
majority (187 votes to two) in the UN General Assembly.

Demanding dignity for the CUBAN FIVE must be our daily bread at all platforms
in South Africa!
NB: Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 3 million
supporters, members and activists in more than 150 countries and territories
who campaign to end grave abuses of human rights. Our vision is for every
