Media Statement 18th October 2011 No giant will stop the mighty of the working class POPCRU has noted the salubrious winds of change blowing from Botswana in which public service trade unions have secured a high court ruling, to retain their organizational rights. International Labour Organization [ILO] Conventions and many country’s statutes have sound labour laws which aims to advance economic development, social justice, labour peace and democratization of the workplace. The General Conference of the International Labour Organization, meeting in its Twenty-sixth Session in Philadelphia, adopted, on [this] tenth day of May in the year nineteen hundred and forty-four, amongst others; [e] ‘the effective recognition of the right of collective bargaining, the cooperation of management and labour in the continuous improvement of productive efficiency, and the collaboration of workers and employers in the preparation and application of social and economic measures’. And such commitments cannot be an exception in Botswana with the regime’s shenanigans to savage the shield of workers which is similar to disrespect organizational machinery and other labour law provisions like Section 1[a] [b] [c] of the Labour Relations Act [LRA], as amended, ‘by regulating the fundamental rights conferred by section 27[1] of the constitution’, which says, ‘every person shall have the right to fair labour practices’; be giving effect to obligations incurred by the Republic as a Member State of the International Labour Organization and lastly to provide a framework within which employees and their Trade Unions, employers and employer’s organizations can collectively bargain’, respectively. POPCRU has noted that the Judge in this case ruled that Trade Unions must continue to enjoy access to transport for Union Meetings and Congresses, Secondment of Elected Leadership and also provisions of deduction facility. POPCRU wishes to acknowledge the candid struggles workers in Botswana continue to engage in against all odds. Unity of the Working Class can no longer be adjourned!
