You know who killed him/her, and you are silent about it! Speak Out Now for
Justice........
POPCRU will join the March against Police Killing organized by Faith-Based
Organizations in partnership with the South African Police Services Chaplain on
the 27th October 2011 in SOWETO.
This action by all stakeholders emanates from the Summit on Police Killing held
this year at Boksburg in which this scourge of undermining the right to life of
Workers within the Criminal Justice was elevated to become a societal
responsibility.
‘From 2003/2004 about 108 were killed, 2004/2005 about 94, 2005/2006 about 95,
in 2006/2007 about 108, in 2007/2008 about 107, in 2008/2009 about 105, in
2009/2010 about 101 and in 2010/2011 about 93 were killed’.
The reflection on the scourge in the current conjuncture is a worrying
development!
And Gauteng [201], Kwazulu-Natal [178] are the worst affected followed by
Eastern Cape [83], Western Cape [68], Mpumalanga [45] and North West [45].It
was amplified that police killings affect morale whilst traumatizing colleagues
and families.
Statistics have proved that circumstances under which police members were
killed indicate the following trends;
· 20% of incidents while police were responding to a crime during search
and seizures or conducting follow ups,
· 4% of incidents police officers were killed by colleagues pointing to
levels of work related stress,
· Family disputes accounted for 2% of deaths which are love triangles,
ex-partner or domestic violence,
· 5% of police died while engaged in arguments with members of public,
and
· 8% were killed when being robbed for their guns.
Commission on the role of civil society in preventing attacks on police
officers, amongst others, resolved on;
* Building synergy of efforts within the criminal justice system and
community structures to fight police killings and crime,
* Empowering community policing forums to executive their mandate,
* Convening Summits should in all local communities to sustain the
campaign, and
* Enhancing the trust element within our communities on police officers
We contend that police killing undermines the rule of law and also the
tenacity of our constitutional imperatives in recognition of fundamental human
rights espoused by all stakeholders who will be participating in this event.
Campaigns resolutions have long being taken and now it’s time for ACTION. And
it starts with you!
You know who might have killed someone, and the time is now to take
responsibility to share that information for justice to take its course!
POPCRU adjures all members of the community to join the MARCH against Police
Killing, to regain the moral fibre of our society and restore respect for human
life.
