Indeed the whole of the working class can feel proud of President Zuma's
excellent choice in cde Nxesi. We need cadres who will devote all their
energies on serving the people of SA, especially the working class and not
people who get embroiled in scandals because of their self-serving interests!

Let us all wish cde Nxesi well in this very important portfolio. I am certain
he will acquit himself with distinction.

Amandla!!!

*SADTU congratulates its former General Secretary Thulas Nxesi for his
appointment as the Minister of Public Works*

We believe the appointment, which has come hardly a year after Cde
Nxesi's appointment as Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Land
Reform is in recognition of his capabilities as a leader. Nxesi's
meteoric rise in parliament is due to his dedication to the betterment
of the lives of the poor and the marginalized in South Africa. He is
pragmatic and a true revolutionary who worked tirelessly to build a
strong and dedicated teacher union.

As a principled leader Cde Nxesi didn't suffer from the need to be a
populist and demagogue leader but always stood firm to defend the
Alliance and its leadership.

Cde Nxesi was deployed to Parliament by the ANC in May 2009. He first
served as the chairperson of the International Relations Portfolio
Committee before he became the Deputy Minister in October last year.
SADTU has no doubt that Cde Nxesi will, through his pragmatism, handle
the portfolio.

Cde Nxesi cut his teeth in politics through his activities in education
transformation. He worked tirelessly towards the formation of the South
African Democratic Teachers Union. He recruited and organized members
and was elected General Secretary in 1995. His work in the Union
resonated in the international teacher union arena. In 2004, Nxesi was
elected as President of Education International (EI) -- a global teacher
union federation with more than 30 million members. His work within EI
was impeccable. He received a special commendation at the EI's Congress
held in Cape Town in July.
