*Matric exams 'going well': union*

*Noloyiso Mbalane, East Coast Radio, Durban, 29 October 2011*

The Class of 2011 has completed its first week of the National Senior Certificate examinations without any major glitches.

Teachers' union SADTU says no incidents have been reported, except in Mpumalanga near Hammarsdale, where a pupil was allegedly refused entry to an exam venue because her hairstyle didn't conform to school regulations.

The union's Mbuyiseni Mathonsi says teachers are still assisting pupils with extra lessons and will continue to do so until the end of the exams.

More than 500 000 Grade 12 pupils across the country are writing this year's finals.

Mathonsi says they are working with the Education Department to ensure the remaining tests go smoothly.

"We see that everything is actually going quite well. We have interviewed learners after writing their examinations, they seem confident. We have reasons to be hopeful that we have turned the corner as KwaZulu-Natal, and therefore we expect nothing but the best results," he said.
