Residents from several township wards marched into the Port Elizabeth city
centre under the banner of the SACP in protest against lack of service delivery
and political interference by ANC leaders in the Nelson Mandela municipal
affairs.

Among the demands by the party and Cosatu members were for the ANC regional
leadership to cease meddling in Nelson Mandela Bay municipality’s
administration.

They also called for the release of the Kabuso forensic report findings and for
those implicated in the report to be criminally prosecuted.

The probe, which was instituted by the provincial government into corruption in
the municipality, found widespread corruption that implicated senior ANC
regional leaders and business people in tender irregularities.

The SACP Mbuyiselo Ngwenda district deputy secretary, Msingathi Sipuka, said
residents, especially in townships, were faced with huge service delivery
problems daily.

Among those were deteriorating infrastructure, poor health services,
sub-standard refuse collection, unreliable meter reading, high unemployment,
crime, HIV-Aids and widespread corruption.

The march by the SACP members appeared to have been directed at certain ANC
regional leaders, including party chairman Nceba Faku.

The party claimed Faku’s businesses were involved in the Nelson Mandela Bay’s
major housing and other infrastructural projects.

Last week SACP leader and human settlements director Mvuleni Mapu spoke of
rampant interference by the ANC regional headquarters in the affairs of his
directorate, including in the payment of contractors. “We are even told who to
pay and from which funds,” Mapu said.

Last week the party and SA Municipal Workers Union came out in support of mayor
Zanoxolo Wayile on the appointment of Bhisho-seconded acting municipal manager
Themba Hani.
