CORRUPTION AT THE SABC *

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is saddened to hear that Mr. Sipho
Sithole who was under investigation according to the Auditor General’s
Report whilst working for the South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC)
regarding conflict of interest issues and corruption is back at the SABC.

Mr. Sithole was employed at the SABC during Advocate Dali Mpofu’s tenure as
the SABC Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO). He was Executive Director of
Risk Management and Strategy. During that period when Mr. Sithole was at
the SABC, the corporation lost close to R1bn and was forced to seek a
government guarantee to pay its debtors. Mr. Sithole at the time replaced
Mr. Justice Ndaba who has also been fingered for corruption and conflict of
interest issues.

Mr. Phil Molefe (Acting GCEO) is now appointing someone who left the
Authority with a cloud of controversy over his head. The suspicion we are
having now is that there is a premeditated appointment looking at those who
have expertise and a history of looting public resources instead of running
our public broadcaster. CWU calls for an investigation to conducted
regarding the appointment of Mr. Sithole as we believe that our country has
more than enough people with clean managerial record and successes who are
suitable for the job.

This appointment is an insult to the nation as it portrays a picture of
nation with no skills if that skill does not include a history of
corruption allegations that include among others, the manipulation of
company systems and the looting its resources. We call on Minister of
Communications, Ms Dina Pule and the Portfolio Committee on Communications
led by Mr. Eric Kholwane to decisively intervene and restore order at the
SABC to prevent the reoccurrences of the recent past, where millions of
Rands went for personal interest in one way or another. The SABC is
obviously one of the targeted sectors by the tenderpreneurs and hyenas.
