Media Statement 16th November 2011 POPCRU on vetting of Private Security Companies POPCRU has welcomed the call by the Minister of Police; Mr Mthethwa on applying stricter regulations to enhance the fight against crime and corruption. And called on the private security industry‘not be in direct opposite but be in unison with our [government] approach’. ‘The private security industry is growing at a fast pace and we must also align our regulation strategies to deliver effective regulation’,said the Minister. Whilst, we agree that the industry has served to create job opportunities in this country, however it is unlettered on how many young men and women are under-employed by these companies and POPCRU reiterates its total support on progressive Trade Unions organizing these workers, to continue to fight for a decent work agenda on same. We argue that the Minister of Police is eloquently correct on ‘tightening of the registration criteria to deter criminals from participating in the industry and ensure strategic limitation and prohibition of foreign control over certain sectors of our security industry’. POPCRU reiterate its stance to support the continuing vetting of these companies on their personnel, ammunitions and other labour law consideration, to continue to avert harbouring people who are a threat to the safety of citizens and their properties.
