*ANCYL lawyers to appeal sentences today* * * *Moipone Malefane, Sowetan, Johannesburg, 24 November 2011*LAWYERS representing ANC Youth League leaders are to submit their appeals application today before the ANC national appeals committee. This comes amid sharp divisions within the league over who should replace Julius Malema should he lose his appeal.
Sowetan has also learnt that the KwaZulu-Natal chapter of the league has been advised to hold a consultative forum this weekend to discuss how to respond to the disputed ANCYL constitutional amendments.
Malema, pictured, his deputy Ronald Lamola, secretary Sandiso Magaqa, his deputy Kenetswe Mosenogi and treasurer Pule Mabe together with league's spokesman Floyd Shivambu are appealing their sentences with the hope they will be overturned.
They were found guilty by the party's national disciplinary committee on several charges, including bringing the party into disrepute. Should Malema and Shivambu lose their appeals, they have to vacate their positions for five and three years respectively. Other leaders received suspended sentences.
The ANCYL NEC will decide on who should lead them in case Malema loses as it has the powers to make decisions in between congresses.
The league's NEC is currently divided between Lamola, who is favoured by Malema, and Mabe, who has the support of other members, as potential successors to Malema.
Sowetan has learnt that there is already lobbying in the NEC and, recently, a meeting of provincial chairpersons and secretaries was held in Sandton - where Mabe was discussed as an obstacle.
In its appeal, the league is expected to argue it is independent from its mother body and that the ANC NDC relied on the league's "old" constitution when it handed down its sentences.
The league produced an altered constitution soon after the sentences, which allows it to make its own decisions about any sanctions handed down by the mother body.
But the constitution is disputed as most ANCYL members who attended their June elective congress claimed those changes were never adopted by the congress.
