*ANC CAUCUS OF THE GAUTENG LEGISLATURE’s STATEMENT ON THE SUDDEN PASSING OF
COMRADE KENNETH BATYI*

**

*“A leader, a cadre, a revolutionary”*

**

The ANC Caucus of the Gauteng Legislature has learnt with dismay and
sadness of the sudden death of Comrade Kenneth Batyi. Comrade Batyi was a
member of the Gauteng legislature from Daveyton in Ekurhuleni. This has
come as a shock for the ANC Caucus as he showed no signs of ill-health. A
charismatic leader who ensured that we remain jubilant at all times.
Comrade Batyi possessed the ability to unite people and provide leadership
in all aspects in the Caucus and the movement. ****

Born and raised in the politically quiet but suppressed rural environment
of the Eastern Cape in the 1960s, Kenneth Batyi finished his schooling at
Cala High School in 1984 and immediately headed for Gauteng in search of
work opportunities. Over the ensuing years, he was employed by several
companies, including Renza, where he acquired machinist skills over five
years of employment. ****

Prompted by his experiences of living in a shack, in 1988, he became a
leader of the Daveyton Civic Association, going on to become Deputy
Chairperson of the township’s arm of the South African National Civic
Association (SANCO), until 1998. In 1995, he was elected as the Chairperson
of the ANC Daveyton and Benoni branches. Comrade Kenneth Batyi was one of
the cadres of this movement who fought tirelessly to destroy the pillars of
apartheid. He was actively involved in Daveyton Civic Association and Self
Defence Unit in the early 1990’s. In 1996 he was elected to serve as an ANC
Branch Chairperson (Daveyton Branch) and in 1997 he was elected as Zonal
Chairperson for Daveyton / Etwatwa Zone, under his leadership we had a
united and active organisation that was in touch with the people on the
ground. In 1994 he served in the Benoni Interim Local Government. He has
served tirelessly within the legislature and has remained a humble servant
of the people.****

In 1999, Batyi came to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and joined the
Social Development, the Health and the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture
Committees. Following the 2004 elections, he was seconded to the Department
of Social Development as Deputy Director, a seven-month assignment. He
returned to the Legislature in December 2004, when he was appointed to the
Agriculture, Environment and Conservation and the Gender, Youth and People
with Disabilities (GEYODI) committees. He retained the love of soccer he
developed during his playing years at school and remained loyal to Kaizer
Chiefs. ****

We send our heartfelt condolences to the Batyi family in these trying
times. Our prayers, our thoughts and hearts are with them.****
